James G. Friesen, Ph.D. believes that American people and therapists are denying the fact that sex abuse tends to produce « multiple personalities » in its victims. He seeks to prove that sexual abuse, and particularly cultic or Satanic abuse, does indeed shatter personality, so that the victims may see themselves having « alters », or various personalities. Such a syndrome does exist, argues Friesen. It is no « mirage. » It is simply not honest for therapists to tell the abused that they have a « false » or « dissociated memory », or a « pseudo-memory ». He thinks memories are mostly factual, and should be taken seriously. Therapists should not evade the factual memories of the abused by using « hypnosis », « regression therapy », or « trance states therapy ».
